| Our COO Lesleigh Watson is not shy about her passion for the LIVESTRONG foundation and her energy and enthusiasm is infectious. This passion spread to the hosting committee of Ingram Micro’s VentureTech Network and as a result this year’s invitational included a “Give Back” event that raised $40,000 for LIVESTRONG. Attendees of the invitational got to enjoy a casino night where their donations were transferred into playing chips, raffle tickets and fabulous prizes! Read more about this year’s invitational. | Northwest Computer Support team members had a great time braving the cold and rain at the 4th Annual St. Paddy’s Day Run in Tacoma. Eight of us hit the payment early Saturday morning, running and walking for 3.1 cold and wet miles. Two of our team members, Marvin Herstad and Ryan Primiani finished in the top ten in their age groups at 24:29 and 27:13 respectively.
NWCS decided to sponsor staff participation in this event as an incentive in our LIVESTRONG ‘Get Active’ campaign, promoting healthy habits and raising money for The LIVESTRONG foundation. If you are interested in supporting our campaign please, click here. We always have a new team event in the works and we’d love for you to join us. Follow us on Facebook for updates.

| Northwest Computer Support is energized for our 2012 campaign. In 2011 NWCS was proud to participate in supporting LIVESTRONG as a member of the Pac-West chapter of the Ingram Micro VentureTech Network. As co-president of the Chapter, COO Lesleigh Watson upped the momentum for both the chapter and NWCS.
Due to these efforts, Lesleigh along with husband & CEO, James Watson were invited to attend the Ride for the Roses Weekend in Austin, TX. The event is a long-standing LIVESTRONG tradition that celebrates and thanks their most dedicated fundraisers. Held in conjunction with the LIVESTRONG Challenge Austin, the weekend offers supporters, LIVESTRONG staff and board members to come together. This experience brought our executive team back with a revitalized sense of purpose and pride in supporting the LIVESTRONG Foundation.
According to LIVESTRONG CFO Greg Lee they aren't alone in this feeling; “It’s that those attending the Ride for the Roses weekend get it. They experience the energy and passion that we have for our mission because they come to Austin and literally experience it. We’d love to be able to bottle that up and share that with the 28M people around the world living with cancer, as well as their families and friends.”
With that energy and enthusiasm we are prepared to get active, and raise $55,000 in 2012.

| “90% of businesses don’t know what they are spending on printing” Source: Buyers Laboratory Inc.
Printer-related costs are the single largest under-managed expense in business today. The number of printers in our offices, and the print volume being produced on each, has steadily increased “under the radar.” Most organizations have purchased and placed printers at will, deploying them in response to employee request or a sense of entitlement. Many are not networked and remain undetected by IT departments.
Often lost in under-the-radar printer growth is the understanding of costs involved in using printers once placed. Print cartridges, maintenance parts, and the occasional service call quickly add up becoming a significant expense for any business. For example:
1. 1-3% of corporate revenues are spent on internal printing.
2. On average, employees print 12,000 pages a year, averaging $300-$500 in toner costs per employee, and can exceed $1,000 in high document-producing industries. 3. 50% of all help-desk related calls are printer-related.
What You May Not Know About Your Print Environment:
· How many printers you own and the pages they produce.
· How much time is spent ordering, stocking, and changing the nearly two dozen types of cartridges needed to keep a typical printer fleet up and running.
· How much time is spent on printer-related help-desk calls.
· How much toner isn’t making it to the printed page.
· How a printer’s “total cost of ownership” affects your overall operating costs.
· How to place a printer based on the printer capacity and proximity to employees.
· How to channel the majority of print volume to your most cost-effective printers.
Becoming More “Print-Aware”
Despite the quiet growth of printers and their related expense, many organizations have recently begun to realize the need for greater visibility and management of printer-related expenses. Many have turned to a Managed Print Solution provider for help.
Why Use a Managed Print Solution Provider?
An expert Managed Print Solution provider has a unique perspective of your company’s print management needs and can recommend the most cost-effective printing solutions. Costs you may not have previously identified will be demystified and reduced. You save time and money – as much as 10 – 30% on print-related costs – and your office staff (especially IT) stays focused on the top priorities of you business.

| Meet Ken, the newest member of our team. Ken has a long history in IT, his first computer was a commodore 64 and his first ‘online’ experience was accessing Bulletin Board Systems with a 1200 baud modem in 1985. As an IT sales rep he has developed his skills working for several start-up companies as well as working at Microsoft as a Partner Engagement Manager. Ken has sold everything from Content Management Solutions, Hardware, Software, Cloud Solutions, Connectivity, VPN and VOIP, with his most recent experience in selling Managed Services (specifically MS SQL, MySQL, and Oracle Remote Database Administration).
Ken holds a B.A. in Communications/Advertising from Washington State University joining our Repair Lead, Neil Cramer as one of the few Cougars on staff.
Ken enjoys traveling and took some time before joining us to visit Turkey and practice his amateur photography. A true Seattleite he enjoys outdoor activities like skiing, camping, fly-fishing, a wide variety of music and trying new types of food and cooking. He considers himself pretty knowledgeable on the local restaurant scene and would love to give you a recommendation.
We are excited to have Ken as part of our NWCS sales team.

| Uncertainty in enforcement, creates business risk for Medical Practices not yet compliant.
Now more than ever, medical practices need to partner with IT professionals who understand the mandates, regulation and incentive programs that are affecting their business. On January 1st, 2012, the new federally mandated HIPAA version 5010 format for electronic billing went into effect. However, many payers, clearing houses, EPM software venders and medical practices are still not compliant and unable to bill correctly to the specifications of this format.
So far, this has not affected most claim reimbursements thanks to a 90-day grace period on the 5010 compliance date, granted by the federal Department of Health and Human Services. Unfortunately, many healthcare facilities are not aware that the grace period, as defined, does NOT actually protect them from having claims rejected for 5010 non-compliance. According to the notice, the Department of Health and Human Services makes clear that deadline for compliance remains January 1st, 2012. The grace period is only a statement of non-enforcement of compliance, allowing insurance payers flexibility in their rollouts. Most large insurance payers have spent most of 2011 testing and are in fact ready to receive 5010 billing claims but have decided to continue to support both 4010 and 5010 transactions through the grace period. Others, like the State of Washington’s DSHS have stated that regardless of the grace period offered, they are only accepting the new standard in compliance with the mandate of January 1st, 2012.
Despite the confusion over deadlines, grace periods and postponements, one thing should be very clear to all medical professionals, HIPAA 5010 standards are in affect and you must be compliant or risk serious delays in claims reimbursements. As more and more payers join the ranks of compliancy, non-compliant medical practices will find themselves struggling to submit claims, scrambling to schedule IT resources for conversions and ultimately rush through upgrades that will result in instability and frustration for the whole practice. Rather than hoping for further extensions or waiting to see how long payers will continue excepting 4010, all medical practices should be working with their IT partners to make compliancy with 5010 standards a top priority.
Please continue to follow our blog to find out more about HIPAA 5010, and other medical compliance information each month.
